Good Asian Food in Duluth

My friend from Chicago is visiting. We used to go to the Lotus Inn. Where should we go now?

  1. Had great pho and solid fresh spring rolls at Oriental House II last week!

We like China Cafe on London Road for Chinese.

  2. We just came from dinner at Pak’s, corner of Grand Ave and 42nd Avenue W. Yum. They have a special — curry fish cakes app — this week. It was delicious! We had the usual curry puffs with that and red curry chicken, medium spicy. It was all delicious, I think this is one of the best restaurants in Duluth. Highly recommended!

  3. Pak’s is great. It’s on par with Thai Krathong for the dish I like (chicken basil). The only gripe I would have is that their portion size went noticeably down not too long ago. It used to barely fit in the to-go container. Now, the food humbly tries its best to top the half-way mark.

  4. I used to love Thai Krathong, but my favorite dish is not very enjoyable due to the size of their veggies in their curry.

I like to be able to eat both meat AND veggies in the same bite, but alas all I get is a huge chunk of bell pepper.

  5. I ate at Bejing once and that was enough for me. China Cafe and Zhong Hua are okay; Taste of Saigon and Thai Krathong are much better.

  6. As far as I’m concerned, Pak’s and Sala Thai are the two best Asian restaurants in town. Beijing is OK, they deliver, they give you a ton of food, and their country tofu is fantastic. But in terms of overall food quality and freshness, it’s Pak’s and Sala Thai, hands down.

Try one dish at these two places, then somewhere else, you will see what I mean. You can taste the difference. Thai Krathong also has higher prices than the others, because it’s in a high-rent area. Their menu is almost exactly the same menu as Sala Thai, but there’s definitely a price differential. I also like that Pak’s and Sala Thai both make the effort to develop relationships with their customers. That’s important to me.

  7. The best Chinese food hands down is Giant Panda. Only order off the Szechuan menu. Real Chinese food, which is extremely rare for up here.

  8. Thanks for the suggestions — I need to go back to Pak’s — went once and liked it…we ended up not eating Asian at all…but did go to Duluth Grill, Lake Avenue, Dubhlinn (before the comedy), Valentini’s — all good…
