After a seven-year hiatus I’m moving back to Duluth and bought a home. Does anyone have a homeowners insurance recommendation?

I’ve been with Young & Associates Agency (202 W. Superior St.; 722-1481) for homeowner’s insurance for 15+ years, and have no complaints.
Jason McCaffrey at Twin Ports Insurance.
We switched to them and they found the same level of coverage for us at literally 50% the cost for home, auto and business insurance. Definitely an eye popper when you go through them and see their prices compared to some of the big insurance companies. Definitely check them out.
Joe Golcz at State Farm on Superior Street in Lakeside. Excellent customer service and very competitive pricing.
Insurance is fully commoditized, and as such you really want to shop it hard for the best price.
Many companies have increased rates for homes in Minnesota in the past couple of years and you might be better off dealing with a local company that understands Duluth doesn’t get tornadoes, earthquakes, hurricanes, etc.
I have had very good luck with North Star Mutual Insurance Company; they have a couple of agencies in Duluth:
Spirit Valley Agency
31 N. 21ST Ave. W.
Duluth, MN 55806
(218) 624-5723
Rice Lake Agency
4428 W. Tischer Road
Duluth, MN 55803
(218) 727-0408
We’ve got ours through Otis-Magie. I don’t know why anyone would get their insurance of any kind independently. Get an independent agent and they’ll shop out the best rate for you. (Auto-Owners is our actual home-owners insurers.)
