It happened in Duluth in 1938. That’s all we know. What rink? Who are these kids?
There are thousands of pictures like this in shoe boxes at antique stores or for sale on eBay for $2 – the details and identities seemingly lost forever.
The objectives of the Duluth Mystery Photo series are:
1) Maybe someone will actually recognize a person or find a clue that helps unravel the mysteries of a photo.
2) At the very least, it’s an opportunity for you to write fan fiction about characters and scenery in random old pics.

Ordean was built in 1938 and the new school grounds included a hockey rink. I tried to match up those houses to no avail.
I’ve been bouncing around Google maps looking at dozens of places that have and used to have skating/hockey rinks, but also to no avail. Then on a whim I wondered if a park in my old neighborhood perhaps had one at one time. I couldn’t remember one there myself, but they’ve had skating for many years there without a defined rink, like the one in the photo.
Bingo! Sure enough, Grant Park, also known as Grant recreational field near Myers-Wilkins (formerly Grant) Elementary school. The trees and things have grown considerably in the 76 years since, and besides some modifications over the years, all the houses match up. The photo is roughly pointed toward East 11th Street and North 10th Avenue East.
Nice. Yeah the far right house is 922 E. 11th St. Awesome.

I visited the scene of the mystery recently, but I don’t think my modern photo quite matches up right.
