I went up the north shore looking for a little north woods fun and dinner and found a little bar/restaurant/motel just south of Two Harbors called Earthwood that has a fantastic fish and chips dinner made with lake herring caught by local fishermen and beer battered fries. Two local beers (Bent Paddle and Castle Danger) on tap and huge deck made this trip a memorable experience. Has anyone else stumbled onto any hole in the wall fish and chips shops? The Earthwood can’t be the one and only!

The herring is outstanding at the Earthwood. Between that and the Castle Danger on tap, we spend a lot of our going-out budget there.
You have my hopes up! It is so hard to find real and good fish and chips. I look forward to trying them out.
Wait a minute… beer battered fries??!! Sigh…
I will try there, thanks. Angry Trout in Grand Marais is pretty fine, if not a tad pricey.
And not exactly a hole-in-the-wall … Judy’s in Two Harbors is under new management and has all-you-can-eat walleye on Friday. I haven’t tried it yet, but planning on it.
Dockside Fish Market, Grand Marais – cheaper and less pretentious then Angry Trout. Excellent fish and chips.
Cove Point Crossing (at entrance to Cove Point Lodge). Fish is caught in Cove Point; not on their regular menu but check the specials board or ask.
Would love to see some Duluth area restaurants carrying herring dishes. I make a point of ordering herring when I see it on a menu (gotta support our local fisherman!).
The Super One in Two Harbors also sells fresh herring when it’s available.
Special of $4 for a burger and fries can’t be beat.
