Well, it’s called Winter Storm Orko, but I think that sounds kinda dumb.
I like Nemo as a name for a storm so much better.
When did they start naming blizzards, for Christ’s sake?
Orko might be fine for the name used nationwide. At PDD, we like to have a localized name for storms, like the Leap Day 2012 Snowmageddon.
I liked the naming of blizzards until I learned we’re facing the wrath of Orko. Orko? The Weather Channel names storms as badly as Frank Zappa named kids.
Considering how the video above concludes, perhaps we should call it Winter Storm Dorko. (Well, I had to say it before someone else did.)
I just want to agree with Paul. I’m of two minds on the topic of naming blizzards, which is very Duluthy so I know I’m probably in good company here.
Having a Weather Channel type name for a storm is jingoistic (if that’s a word). Try “For Pete’s sake it’s just a blizzard” as many of our grandpas would’ve said. But, having a very organic, locally relevant name/hashtag is great. “Leap Day 2012” is a perfect example. “Halloween blizzard” is the gold standard, anyone hears that and they know exactly what you mean. Winter Storm Dorko is a nice try, but I’m not feeling it.
While I’m here, I just want to say that my favorite PDD post of all time might be the Zombie Snowpacalypse one including maps and diagrams from a few years back. This is not the first time that I have brought this up. I would pay money to have a local weather man or woman actually give this forecast some time.

I will call this the ‘haven’t seen this since Christmas Eve 2009 blizzard’. The snow is layering on our trees like thick white icing, and I don’t think we have had this since the Christmas storm 3 years back. Is that right? Or is my memory faultyn(again).
I’m beginning to feel like Typhoid Mary. I go to NYC. The next day, a blizzard of epic proportions. I return to Minneapolis. Ditto. Back in Duluth. Double Ditto. Well, happy Chinese new year, everyone.

Beautiful “Blizzard” of 2013. The drive to work was so pretty. The snow is sparkling and sugar-like, thick on the branches (hope no one lost power though). The lake is beautiful this morning too.
With school cancelled today, around our house we’re calling it the “Second-Chance-for-toothpick-bridge-science-project-due-this-week- procrastinators” Blizzard.
Catchy, huh?
One thing’s for sure; the surfers enjoyed the storm.
Hammer of the Gods should’ve been the storm name! I want to have spiritual knowledge of Lake Superior too. Nice these guys didn’t struggle with the soundtrack. Rolled a J on the back of III and let ‘er rip.
