Ween … and you?

Hola, PDDers! Some folks and I are going to be performing the whole Ween record Chocolate and Cheese on Friday, Dec. 30 at Pizza Luce here in Duluth. We’re excited!

I am looking for someone that would be interested in documenting the rehearsals leading up to the gig and then the gig itself. I would probably be able to get you a little money for your time but not much. It’d certainly be a plus if you were borderline obsessive about the record.

We get together for a couple hours on Thursday afternoons in the Washington Studios to run the tunes. Hopefully this would be a decent time for you to come video for a bit. We’ve got (gulp) 8 rehearsals scheduled leading up to the gig.

Feel free to leave any contact info in the comments below or you can email me. marcgart(at)hotmail

  1. Hey–if PDDers are going to be censored for using nonrespectful or ‘offensive’ language, then can we please not have naked hooters and coy crotch shots on this site?

    Thank you.

  2. I have now edited Marc’s post to make the hooters smaller, so they are less intimidating.

For the record, there isn’t really a policy on PDD for “offensive” language. We just pull out all the name calling. So write what you fucking want, but don’t call anyone a fucker.

    See how it works?

Having crudely made that point, I will also note we do prefer that everyone write intelligently, rather than like a crazed swearbox … but we’re not going to get all uptight about it.

  3. Fuckin’ A! This should be a fun event! Ween is crazy, and this is the best of their craziness. I think it’s his lung!

  4. Are Gene or Dean Ween going to show? Crazed swearbox! My new band name! That or … dipshits.

  5. This picture is offensive, please reconsider allowing it on your blog. I have been very supportive of PDD and have told many many folks, but if this is what can be displayed, I will change my stance most definitely.

  6. I don’t think anyone said human bodies are offensive, just that objectification of humans is offensive. And it is, as it dehumanizes people.

  7. Jeezus people, ain’t we easily offended, did you ever hear of tongue-in-cheek? Take a moment to research the album cover before whipping your fucking selves into a frenzy

  8. It’s this kind of stuff that makes me miss Duluth! Since I can’t be there I hope someone will go as voodoo lady; shaking that stick and driving them crazy.

On a side note, if the album cover is offensive the delicate-minded folks should pass by it rather than continue reading on about it.

  9. First off, in my opinion, I think the idea here is album ‘art’ work. If you find yourself offended by the album artwork, you can move along, or do what you need to..but:

I think the logical thing to do here is to focus – on the main point of the post (Ween..performing..documenting..rehearsals..etc…), rather than turning this straightforward request into a binary, supreme debate about pornographic material vs 1st amendment definitions..or whatever.

But, I guess there always could be a ‘bitching’ or ‘politics’ tag stuck on this one. For fucks sake..

Ps. Caribou runner: I challenge you go around recanting your support and chatter about pdd “because they put a picture of the album cover of Ween’s Chocolate & Cheese on a post, for heaven’s sake”.

My response would aptly be: “Who are you, and what the hell are you talking about”?

  10. Carla, maybe a few coy shots of Marc’s penis, and some shots of big, bulging testicles. And then PDD can blow the photo up real big, for us to see some lovely morning.

Really, really, quite truly tacky photo on PDD. What are we, 12 yr old boys in junior high, salivating over the latest Playboy spread, which is exactly what this album cover looks like.

  11. I’m kind of more of a Pure Guava guy myself, any way I could talk you guys into doing that one instead? There’s Springtime Theme, Poopship Destroyer, think of the possibilities. Someone clarify, were people seriously offended, or just kidding? I couldn’t handle it if they were serious. Myself, I was moved to tears by the patriotic cover. I will do the filming and do a good job, perhaps it will lead me toward my main project goal of making a film on the Fractals, but I don’t edit, and I will need to borrow a camera, who do I contact?

  12. I’m with Buck on Guava. After that they just got … weird. Then Phish came along and made it worse.

  13. Hey Marc – I’ll edit your film for $5. Oh, no wait — it’s you. That’ll be 10K.
And there will be lots of shots of your crotch.

  14. Carla, I think you meant to write “Oh, no wait wait — it’s you.”

(Gartman had a band called No Wait Wait a few year back. Explaining jokes in parenthesis is my favorite thing to do.)

(Barrett Chase gets the win, but clearly there should be no explanation of his above comment to those who don’t get it.)

The first person to Photoshop Marc Gartman on the cover of The Woman Today with the headline “Center Spread: Gartman crotch shots” can pick the day and time that PDD buys a round to celebrate this accomplishment at Chester Creek Cafe’s Wine Bar.

  15. You know, the more I think about this, the angrier I get. This is supposed to be a community blog. The Mayor weighs in on political issues. Sushi debates occur. This is not supposed to be the Playboy channel. Users should not be called babies for being offended by this, and should not be told to just ignore something like this. Why is this offensive? Because I am 47 and don’t like to log on to my community blog, and immediately flash back to my junior high days, when girls were considered simply the sum of their bra size and crotch availability.

This blog has more class, doesn’t it? Let’s not joke about this. It’s simply not funny.

Thank you for letting me express my views.

  16. And Paul, I notice you’re not inviting anyone to actually post shots of this guy’s, or any guy’s, genitals. Why, because that would be inappropriate and offensive?

    Exactly.

  17. I for one would like to hear Rick Boo weigh in on the issue…though an extreme “side boob” bias might exist, so his opinion might be tainted.

  18. The Ween album cover does not show anyone’s genitals. If Marc Gartman wants to strap a gaudy belt across his seductive midriff on a poster for this show, frankly, I would get a good laugh out of it.

  19. I think it’s a legitimate photo because it’s the cover of the album that the band will be performing. Plus, Ween intended the album cover to be an ironic cliché. It’s not as if either Ween or Marc Gartman intended this image in the spirit it’s being unfortunately interpreted.

I’m thinking back, and I can only recall removing an image from PDD once. It was a photoshopped picture of Laura Bush naked from the waist down. If something like that appeared again, we would of course remove it.

This is the internet, and you will occasionally see images and read language that might appear on basic cable.

  20. I’m always confused by the “this is a community blog” argument. It is not. It is a privately-owned for-profit website that allows community members to post and comment.

  21. By allowing “community members to post and comment,” PDD should be considered a “community blog.” If it were owned by the community itself instead of the five members of the community who own it, someone would still have to decide what is appropriate to post and what is not.

Community members have varying opinions on everything. One community member posted an image another community member didn’t like. Neither one of them are wrong in their opinion.

The average person will have no problem with Ween album art, but those who do have a problem with it aren’t wrong to have a problem with it. But if they expect everyone else to have the same problem, well … that could be a problem.

  22. I was trying to differentiate between the notion of a community-owned blog, and a blog to which the community has access. PDD is the latter. As a business, the proprietors of PDD decide what is acceptable content. They may consider various inputs from the user community, but ultimately, the owners decide.

I think my biggest problem may be my lack of problems. Maybe I’ll take up algebra as a hobby.

  23. Someone wasn’t around during the Laura Bush’s Bush post. 😉
I’m ok with the posting of the Ween cover art, as it is related, but honestly I always thought this cover art to be cheesy and unimaginative.
I’m not going to ask anyone to take it down or threaten never to come back, but there’s a lot of other pieces of Ween album art that may have been more appropriate.

  24. Oh, yeah, I missed that fact (duh!). OK, it is completely relevant (ignore my previous comment).

  25. The size of the original post was what made it so offensive, by the way. Was I the only one who logged onto PDD during the early working a.m. hours, and saw this HUGE PHOTO filling my entire computer screen? Had it been posted to the size Paul since shrunk it to, I wouldn’t have even noticed it.

Anyway, thanks for the discussion and I Think We’ve All Learned A Valuable Lesson.

  26. At the basic outset, women and men view/think about/process sex and each other from a fundamentally different place. Having evolved within that separate mindset for eons for reasons of biology and evolution… We could go on for hours about this. One time, my GF went to look for a Playgirl at Globe for a joke present for a coworker, put up to the task by her coworkers, well, they had to go into the basement to find a copy and it wasn’t easy to locate one. Or maybe the men just protested about having them out. So while I empathize with women not enjoying man’s sometimes poor taste portrayals of women, all I’m saying is these differences, and the arguments that ensue, are because of these fundamental differences of the sexes, right or wrong. Bad behavior is learned though, but try reversing them in this world, I will applaud your efforts E. Men will always enjoy looking at the young nude female body, tasteful or tasteless, unless radiation turns them into zombies, and if you knew anything about Ween, and their level of satire, you might understand this photo more, it is called Chocolate and Cheese. I don’t blame you for not wanting a super blow up of it, but I found it stimulating, and patriotic.

  27. Baby Bitch
It’s been a while since I’ve seen you smile
But now you’ve come back again
Came into the room and you saw my girl
And you asked her how long it’s been
“A year” she said and you shook your head
Said “I’m surprised it’s gone on that long”

    Baby, Baby, Baby Bitch
For words I am at a loss
    Baby, Baby, Baby Bitch
I’m better now please fuck off

What else you gonna say when while you’re back
    on your stay
Maybe something, maybe nothing, we’ll see
It’s just too bad, you’re beautiful I guess
I wasn’t for you and you weren’t for me

    Baby, Baby, Baby Bitch
    Please slip back into yourself
    Baby, Baby, Baby Bitch
    Go conquer someone else

People say, “How beautiful, how sweet, how kind”
You’re perfect, you’ve got nothing to hide
But I, for one, have seen the sun
And the bitch that you’ve locked up inside

Got fat, got angry, started hating myself
Wrote “Birthday Boy” for you babe
Now I’m skinny and sick and paranoid
Without a cent to my name

    Baby, Baby, Baby Bitch
Fuck you, you stinkin’ ass ho
    Most beauty I’ve seen
    you come from a dream
But I can’t close my eyes anymore
No, I can’t close my eyes anymore

  28. From the DNT, 10/31/2011- offered without comment:

Reader’s view: Modesty and restraint needed to fight pornography
    By Rosemarie Mitchell

Please display white ribbons against pornography the week of Oct. 30 to Nov. 6, as sponsored by Morality in Media.

It starts innocently with a boy cutting out newspaper ads of women’s underwear and bikinis to make his own Playboy. That can lead to an obsession which can lead to real porn magazines, the Internet and, eventually, the use of women as sex objects. It can hurt his marriage and endanger his children.

Besides the ads, boys are exposed to a constant barrage of sexual images those of us over 40 never could have imagined. It includes cleavage and bikinis on every channel, from local news to movies. It also includes many teachers, store employees, neighbors, churches, Michelle Obama and others who disgrace our country and the many mothers who should be protecting their children.

We used to be able to turn off a channel or avoid movies. But women have increasingly been forcing their sexuality, shamelessly and selfishly, into the public arena where there is no off button. If men exposed themselves they’d be arrested. Cleavage and bikinis are no different.

Girls struggle with anorexia and depression and are becoming promiscuous or suicidal because self-centered and insensitive women force their sexuality into our faces, causing women great stress and confusion while tempting males.

By seeing their gender so willingly flaunt its sexuality, young women are brainwashed into thinking this is normal. So I don’t totally blame them. They haven’t been taught modesty. They “know not what they do,” as Jesus said.

We’re all to blame for tolerating it, for not complaining and for not boycotting businesses and programs that depict women sexually, all of which contributes to pornography and sex trafficking.

Pornography degrades women. But tell me why women willingly expose their bodies, justifying men’s sick, hurtful behavior?

  29. I wore shorts and sandals this summer.

In some cultures (current and past), this would result in shaming, societal expulsion, and even physical harm. In some other times and places, I may have been pelted by stones for the crime of showing some leg. There are some people writing opinion letters at this moment who would decry a woman’s lack of burqua and question her morals and the morals of any society that would allow it.

I have worn many ribbons for many causes, but I will not wear a ribbon that is for the purpose of shaming women and men and teaching how to fear sexuality and the human body.

  30. See, this is what I meant. I got sick of “If you’re cool, then you must love this type of photo, and if you don’t, you must be frigid.”

It’s lame to put up a strawman or faux argument of “Anyone who is offended by this photo must fear sexuality and the human body,” and then use this (false and insulting) point to try and undercut a legitimate argument. Hey, I love sexuality, and there’s nonstop porn at my house. But if I want to look at naked hooters, I’ll look at my own. People can love to love, as it were, and still find this photo degrading. Not everyone has to disagree, but we should be so over this faux line of argument.

  31. I did see the photo in it’s original size and I immediately thought “Ween, all right!”

I own this album and am excited to see Gartman’s influence on the show.

To the rest of you threadjackers, go to the Troll Zone and bitch about what is and is not morally good for society and leave live music postings alone.

  32. New flash: you can love a women for her body AND her brains. They are not mutaully exclusive. The real “ism” or “ist” here is the insulting idea that a women can only be pretty or smart but not both. Insulting also is the idea that if you find someone beautiful you are disdainful of her intellect.

I don’t know Ween from Wonk but it sounds like a musican is trying to do a pretty cool project here so I say you go Gartman!

Please continue to post beautiful women and I will continue to dream about them having big brains.

  33. This post is not entirely an event announcement. It is more of a help-wanted ad, and as such it is well within PDD’s policies. The only way for it to be a non-issue is for everyone to shut up about it.

  34. As I page back fondly through many of these old posts, having accidentally snipped a few of them myself, can’t help but shake in the wonder at the graceful way a few of them went out, in a blaze of glory.

    Thanks Chelle, whoever you are.

  35. The PDD/Ween controversy made it to VisitDuluth.com via the Duluth Art Institute:

Apr 5th- Apr 30th: The Duluth Art Institute Exhibit: Homegrown: Visual Arts Edition
    Time: Mon.-Sat. 10-5PM, Sun. 1-5PM
Remember when Ween redid the album cover of All the Great Hits by the Commodores for their own album? Remember when local musician Marc Gartman used that image to promote his Ween cover concert? Album art can be powerful and the Duluth Art Institute is celebrating the visual arts behind music for an art exhibit coinciding with Duluth’s very popular Homegrown Music Festival. Gig posters, album art, homegrown program covers – we’re gathering up local art of local music to display during homegrown week. Call if you’ve got something to share. Held at Duluth Art Institute.
