Where in Duluth?

  1. hmmm. A pile of rocks somewhere in Duluth? If your intent is for the artsy rock shot, I think that it’s a bit overexposed.

  2. Yeah, I’ve walked by it numerous times, but I can’t remember which section it’s on.

  3. Dave, gone out exploring yet to see which section it is on? I ran by there again today as this is one of my favorite sections of trail.

The gap is large enough for a medium sized human to fit inside.

  4. Dave, your wife is correct!

I believe it is even located in Brewer Park (a named yet never developed park that encompasses much of the area above Skyline between Haines/40th Ave W and where Skyline meets the St. Louis River Rd).

  5. As kids we called this rock “Split Rock.” The first time I heard people talk about going to Split Rock (as in the state park/lighthouse) I got pretty confused. (“Really? You’re going to Split Rock for the weekend?”)

  6. This whole post was obviously a conspiracy to get me to walk the three blocks from my house to Split Rock. Yeah, this is a different rock. The location of Split Rock does *sort of* match the description above though, as it is “between Haines road and Highland Getchel.” It’s below Skyline, though, not above it, and it’s not at all on the SHT.

I hadn’t been there in about 15 years. I can’t believe I mistook the rock above for Split Rock.

Here are some photos I took like five minutes ago. For scale, this rock is about the size of a small garage. I believe it was placed there on its own in the middle of the woods by giant trolls.

  7. Very cool Barrett – and my goal was accomplished!! I wanted to see if folks would actually get out and do some hiking to find this spot ;->

Hmmm – now I want to go find your “Split Rock”!

  8. Thanks! Oh yes, am used to being stealthy on the tracks from back in the days before they plunked a middle school in the midst of the fields/woods/wetlands above Wheeler.
