Is it usual, or even legal, for a landlord to demand that all the tenants leave the apartment building while it is being inspected for licensing? We got the written notice for an inspection in a week and then the landlord tells us face to face “don’t be here while the inspectors are here.” Weird?

Your landlord cannot require you to leave during a licensing inspection.
My landlord lets us know that there will be an inspection on a certain date, but I know my husband was home the last time they came in. The building management makes no requirements about whether we are home or not at the time of inspection.
My landlord wants me here in case there is something that can be fixed on the spot like a burnt out bulb or something like the hiding fire extinguisher.
Landlords must also inform tenants 24 hours prior to entering a residence. It always helps to know your renter’s rights. Knowledge is power.

Thanks. My BF thought it didn’t sound right either. Gwen, that makes a lot more sense that the landlord would want you there. The sprained ankle and I will be ready to face Mr. Creepy Landlord next week. I’m not budging if I have no good or legal reason to.
Whether its really the chief or police or not, he’s right … but don’t take our semi-anonymous postings as the gospel of tenants rights.

Whether or not the *real* Gordon Ramsay did the posting, it would make perfect sense that the man himself would be versed in renter’s rights laws in Minnesota: He and his wife were my first landlords when I moved to Duluth.
Umm, I would consider it rather “risky” to impersonate the Chief of Police, even on a blog posting. Just my opinion.
Chances are, it’s him. He’s posted on here a couple of times in the past, so I know he at least keeps up with what us kids have going on.

Maybe your landlord does not want you to overhear all the requests that the licensing inspector will be making. Therefore keeping you in the dark and blissful in your ignorance of what needs to be fixed.
Or maybe I’m paranoid.
Either way, the only persons who can force you out of you home/ apartment is the police/ sheriff/ military (in the case of Marshall law) or FEMA. (I’m not a lawyer, just have some years working in housing)
Video tape the inspection, see what your landlord thinks of that.
Or invite a few friends over.
I’ve had several apartments/houses inspected while renting, and was told to be on hand so I could let the inspector in.
