Duluth Photographers

Anyone have any recommendation for a local photographer? My wife would like a family portrait for Christmas, and I’d like to make her a happy woman.

  1. Chelsea Morgan at Magic Box Photography has taken our family pics for the past four years or so and she rocks, she’s a *great* photographer and also very affordable. Can’t say enough about her.

  2. I’d second Aaron Molina. He did my brother’s wedding last summer and he did fantastic work. Plus he’s a hell of a nice guy to boot.

  3. In the past 3-5 years the number of photographers has grown exponentially, some of these new “pros” are good but not great – hobbyists trying to make it a business, I would say. One advantage of this is that people can be gotten cheaper and scheduled more easily probably more so than ever before. And let me be clear, some of these new entrants are fantastic, too. I’d say now more than ever it is important to see the work and get a feel for the character of your photographer.

I know or have worked with many if not most of these photographers listed above while DJing at events, promotions, etc. over the past 10 years or so. I think it’s good to catch the heart and soul of the event, plus the technical stuff is really important, too. This weekend I was at an event where the photographer seems to have captured all of those things very well, I could try to find her contact info for you if you are interested. But you are also in good hands with most of the above recommendations (Including Max’s self-recommendation) beyond that I won’t pipe in on any of these except …

I am glad Amanda Hansmeyer is still here in this area. She dropped off the pages of the DNT right around the time of the waves of bloodletting and cutbacks there a year or so ago. Anyway, in her gallery there is a great Kozy Bar shot possibly from her DNT days. It’s worth digging around her site to find.

  4. The combination of this thread with the recommendation of Derek Montgomery makes me want to have an upset Duluthian Christmas card.

  5. @ jessige, I thought the same thing. Instead of a family all in white on a white background, the family stands in the alley with their arms crossed.
And the family update form letter that gets sent with the cards could describe how each family member was wronged over the past year.
That’s gonna be a hot trend.

  6. My thought was that each member of the family could pick the venue that upset them the most, and then you could put each of those next to the description in the form letter.

You know, like I stand next to the unfinished trim in my living room that’s been there for 18 months and cross my arms.

Or, for the more community-minded, we could go out into town and do it. Not just around the house would work.

  7. Also, thanks for the comment Wildgoose. After a stint in Denver, it’s good to be back in Duluth. That photo of the Kozy was taken while I worked at the News Tribune. Thanks!
