A friend of mine is at her wits end trying to find a one-bedroom or studio apartment that is in a centralized Duluth location and is not totally ghetto. She is a sweet, responsible person and is about ready to give up hope, so if you have any ideas or leads, I’d really appreciate you leaving a comment. Thanks so much!

Centralized location is a synonym for ghetto in d-town.
I sent this link to somebody who owns several properties. Good luck.
I’ve been renting a studio in the lovely old Yorkleigh apartment building right across from Leif Erickson Park since February. Go to Shiprock Management site to see if anything here is available. They manage a lot of other apartment buildings, but I can’t say what the other properties are like.
My brother refers to Shiprock as Shipwreck after the wringer they ran him through in Superior. Maybe they’re more on-the-ball with their Duluth properties.
My sister used to live at St Mary’s. Prices were reasonable, apartments were nice, and the management was good. They also allowed her to have cats.

I need a cheap ghetto 1 bedroom too.
It doesn’t necessarily need to be central Duluth, just not out in Gary or Souptown, preferably. Thanks, all!
How long will she need an apartment? I know of an upstairs bedroom, half-bathroom and large empty room, but not sure if they’d rent it for a very long time…
Jody and Mike manage the Devonshire on the 1300 block of First Street. There are efficiencies, studios and one bedrooms. The building is okay to nice and the renters are good. The manager live on the premises. Phone 724-3636.

This reeks of the old comments section on the DNT that was shut down in part due to this type of hyperbole. As a Hillsider I’m used to this sort of comment but it still offends me, especially on PDD.
j-i-l-l-o I know of a great apartment that is open in a great central location in the so-called “ghetto,” which also happens to be my favorite place that I have lived anywhere and I’ve lived all over town and all over the world. Email me with your contact info and I will share it with the landlord. No promises beyond that.
Hey all. I’m the aforementioned friend that’s looking for a place. In addition to a one bedroom or a studio, I’m also open to subleasing a room. I’m planning on being in Duluth until at least this summer. If you know anyone that’s looking for a roommate, and is laid back and mature, please let me know. Thank you to j-i-l-l-o for initially posting this and thanks also to those that responded.
Wildgoose: it was commentary on the implication by the OP. Settle down:
I lived in the Central Hillside from the age of 10-20. I know the score.
Ghettos don’t just happen. They are planned.

What’s Duluth planning?
Yeah, don’t go with Shiprock Management. They shut the heat off the very day I moved in (on a snowy December 1st). Comfort Systems wouldn’t turn it back on until after the weekend. Both my lady and I had strep as we set up our new place wearing freekin snowsuits. Oh, it was one giant fuckyou after another with Mr. Shippee.
Landlords like that give living in the Central Hillside a bad name.
I’d be very interested to speak to anyone who has had a negative experience with Shiprock. Please contact me at arichardson @ chumduluth.org.
I too, have had horrible experiences with Shiprock. No heat, mold, water damaged ceilings, etc. I complained and got a notice to vacate.
I wouldn’t rent from them ever again!
No they are not. Horrible experiences with them.
I have a really cool neighbor looking for a roommate in a quiet Piedmont neighborhood. Great location and I’m sure the rent is negotiable. Email chalkdust6 @ yahoo.com if you’re interested and I’ll pass it on.
Room just off Grand by Denfeld. Perfect for going home-for-the-weekend-mature person. Post interest please.
