This postcard, captioned “Balloon View Harbor, River and Natural Breakwater; Duluth to Left, Superior to Right” raises a few questions. Perhaps the most important one is, how did that tree on the left edge get so tall?
The Minnesota Historical Society dates the card “approximately 1900.” A version from the Marie & Doris Boldt Collection in the Port Huron Museum Collection has a postmark from 1910. The version below was postmarked in 1904.

Reminds me of an old Yellow Pages Raddison ad for their Top of the Harbor restaurant that I saw a number of years ago. It looked like someone grabbed a public domain image without knowing anything about the restaurant, because although it looked nothing like the actual eatery inside, the real kicker was a tree outside the window. Maybe it was that tree.
