Mystery Photo #16: Holm’s Kaffe Stuga

Holm's Kaffe - Fond du Lac

This photo is labeled “Holm’s Kaffe Stuga, Fond du Lac, Duluth, Minn.” From that we can assume the Fond du Lac neighborhood had a Swedish coffee cottage at some time in history. When? Where? And who is this Holm character?

  1. I finally got a tip on this one, via email. Holm’s Kaffee Stuga was located at 123rd Ave. W., according to the 1949 phone directory. That puts it west of the Lake Superior College Emergency Response Training Center and east of Fond du Lac Park.

If you have a 1949 phone, call Douglas 1575 and ask to speak to the proprietor. Maybe that will get us the answers we need.

  2. So, I dug out my 1949 phone and dialed the number. The exchange has obviously changed because the call was answered by a lovely, albeit bewildered woman named Crystal in Theif River Falls who politely asked that I never call her again….

  3. Holm's Kaffe Duluth

This undated postcard offers a little bit of info. At one point it was Mrs. Holm’s Kaffe Stuga. It was a seasonal restaurant, open May 1 to Oct. 1, with a “Christian atmosphere.”

Thanks to John Michel for sending me this.
