East Superior Street

Could anyone tell me how the neighborhood is on East Superior Street near the Rose Garden?

  1. There are technically two neighborhoods there — East Hillside and Endion — but I think people generally refer to the whole area as the East Hillside or they specify “I live on Jefferson Street,” or something like that. I have yet to hear anyone say “I live in the Endion neighborhood.” So consider that a piece of trivia more than anything else.

  2. I live on Superior Street and 15th Ave E. I feel like it’s a very good neighborhood, with the Super One and Walgreen’s nearby if you have any immediate needs from the grocery or drugstore. Walking distance to downtown, close to the Lakewalk, and I feel like it’s a very safe neighborhood. I’m on the same block as the Center for Drug & Alcohol Treatment and there is a good police presence there at least once a day. Personally, I love it here, but it’s on the verge of getting really pricy.

  3. To answer Gighityar’s question: lots if cars, good ice cream through October, roses.

As for Ramos: the annoying and/or wonderful sound of pucks against boards, Ramos.

  4. Can anyone tell me about the neighborhood of 49th and the alley of Cooke? Someone has a pair of bull horns mounted to the front of a 1975 military green pin striped Winnebago that I’m unsure about.

  5. I’ve rented on the 1200 E block of 1st St for about eight years and consider it to be a pretty good neighborhood in terms of population and very good in terms of location.

Also, I may be superstitious, but I’ve always thought that being so close to a drugstore and grocery store does wonders for maintenance time on power outages and the like.

  6. I used to live in this neighborhood. Some blocks are going to be more studenty-noisy than others, but on the whole it’s a nice place to live. Walking distance to Super One, Walgreens, that new Ace Hardware, 3rd St Bakery, the farmers market, the Co-op, close to the Lakewalk and Chester Park, great views of the lake, access to several bus lines…

  7. It is getting a lot better, but you do have a lot of college students in the area. At least the rent is not too bad.

I would note that being within walking distance to that Super One is not really a good selling point. That is, unless, you don’t expect to find anything more exotic in the fruit and vegetables than a pear and some green onions.

  8. I live on 17th Ave and E First St. (so, yeah, technically Endion) and like the neighborhood a lot. It’s pretty quiet, and right by the Lakewalk and the other amenities everyone else has mentioned. Plus, Chester Creek is among the best parks in Duluth.

  9. 12th Avenue and 3rd Street is really busy as far as car traffic goes and there’s a fair amount of late night hollering and gallivanting outside. The higher you get in the avenues though the nicer the neighborhood gets.

  10. I have lived on 15th East and Superior Street for over 20 years.
I love the neighborhood for many of the same reasons that are listed: close to shopping, the lake and Rose Garden, and bus line if needed. All of the businesses on my block are 8 to 5er’s with the exception of Anytime Fitness so parking and noise is not an issue at night.

  11. There are a lot of drug sales in the parking lots at First Street and 14th Avenue East. It must be the “good police presence” Erin was talking about.

Seems like Plaza Super One has had an ambulance out front almost every time I’ve been there. The whole area seems to think it’s OK to take shopping carts home and leave them in the yard.

Third Street Bakery smells really good when I ride past.

  12. While it’s true that that Super One is not exactly the greatest supermarket ever, it at least stocks the basics, and the Co-op is only ten blocks away for when you need quince and dragonfruit.

  13. I lived in Yorkleigh Apts. for a stint in my mid-20s and it was great! The apartments at that time were a little dated but clean and secure. I could see the lift bridge from my first-floor apartment. Life was good. Walking distance to the things you want to walk to (grocery store, Sir Ben’s, Brewhouse, Pickwick, dry cleaner, Lake Superior, Lakewalk, now Jimmy Johns, Great Harvest, hardware store, Walgreen’s, and was also close to my work so bonus there. I think I even stumbled home from the Reef Bar a few times from there. If Yorkleigh is the place you are talking about, I can also let you know how to get up on the roof, which is pretty spectacular.

  14. Could someone dig out the neighborhood map on this one? I am wondering where the “Endion” boundary actually is. I used to live on Jefferson street and, as Paul indicates, I used to say things like “I live down on Jefferson Street” or “It’s kind of by St. Paul’s Church … yeah, that’s the big stone Episcopal church.” But in the years since I have come to call it Endion.

The neighborhood has great walking is close to many things and has much to recommend it. Parking is simply awful in this neighborhood, in the winter especially. But, again, there is great walking, bus access and many homes and apartments have off street parking now. Also, if you don’t drive a particularly nice car and you aren’t carrying a lot of things and/or small children there is not too much trouble with parking it a block or so away. I think the other comments basically reflect my experience.

One of Duluth’s fantastic shops shops “Amazing Alonzo’s” Book exchange would be right under your nose here, too.

  15. Whew! Thanks for posting the map. People who don’t live in the Endion neighborhood are trying to convince me that I don’t live there either. Thanks for the clarification!

  16. Well that’s convenient. I’ve been wondering what the neighborhood we just moved to is called, now I know it is Endion. I’m not sure how many people would know what I meant if I said I lived in the ndion neighborhood, though. I wouldn’t have before moving here. But I love the area so far, for all of the reasons listed above, plus the fact that the block I live on is very quiet and private. And there’s apparently a lot of PDDs living here too!

Paul do you have a map of all the neighborhoods in Duluth? I’m curious what other areas I don’t know the names of.

  17. This post is somewhat old but I will give my two cents anyway. I’ve lived on Superior & 15th, 3rd St. & 14th, and currently I’m around 3rd St. and 15th.

    Pluses:
Close proximity to Lake Superior, the Lakewalk, Leif Erickson & the Rose Gardens, as well as possibilities for beautiful views. Going the other direction, you have access to one of the best trails in Duluth (in my opinion) with Chester Bowl – this can be about a 4.5 mile hike if you take it all the way up (near CSS) and back. If hiking/trail running isn’t your thing, there’s always the Anytime Fitness. You’re also very close to downtown.

Location is close to a mediocre grocery store, a Walgreens,a Jimmy John’s and a Great Harvest Bakery/Sandwich Shop, an Ace hardware store, and auto parts shop, Alonzo’s Book Store, the Chester Creek Book Store/Antique store, Positively 3rd Street Bakery, Burrito Union, a couple laundromats, a small liquor store, and The Farmer’s Market which runs spring-fall on Wednesdays afternoons and Saturday mornings. You’re also fairly close to other businesses and the London Road business district (including about all the fast food options you could need, too). Unfortunately the space that used to be a “mini mall” housing various businesses was bought up by CVS, so another pharmacy will go up across the street from Walgreens within the next year or two. It’s too bad because it would be a nice place to see some small businesses or a deli take up residence. There’s also a bike/ski shop, a couple hair salons, a dentist, and some other small businesses nearby. There are gas stations on 12th and 4th or down on London Road.

    Minuses:
In terms of this neighborhood’s appearance and how “pleasant” it is, it varies block to block. There are nights where the neighborhood is extremely loud. A group of teens screamed and fought for about 20 minutes a couple of nights ago and it’s incredibly loud. The street traffic is loud in some areas too – lots of cars missing mufflers. I have some very shady neighbors and many who have no regard for people trying to sleep, but I also have some really great and friendly neighbors too. A fair amount of college-age kids move into this neighborhood at the beginning of the school year. I’ve witnessed a fair share of domestics, police calls, and fights/ruckus just within or outside of my small building alone.

Parking can be a real pain in the butt if you don’t have off-street. Lots of these college kids don’t yet have a lot of experience parking their cars up or down-hill, and as soon as the school year starts, it’s harder to find anywhere to park- especially in the winter, as another poster commented. Invest in a good set of tires or you’ll be screwed when parking up the hill with ice and snow involved.

Overall it’s a good neighborhood, but it’s nothing fancy or even very special to look at. Parts of it are “iffy” but I’ve never really felt unsafe. It’s definitely several steps up (in safety and appearance) from the central hillside. There are some good views of the lake and rent isn’t bad. I’ve always paid around 350 with roommates or 550-600 on my own in this area, and it really is the best neighborhood for convenient access to lots of things – it’d be a good area to live if you don’t have a car, for instance. Buses run on Superior St. and 4th Street. 2nd & 3rd are one-ways and make any type of transportation nifty, but they’re also loud, as they’re ambulance lines. Watch out for traffic when entering Superior Street from Jefferson, and exercise caution entering 4th from any of the avenues, up OR down – the visibility is awful because they allow cars on the street to park right up to the street corners of the avenues.

    Good luck.
