Wolf Hunting Prohibited on Fond du Lac Reservation

Fond du Lac Band passed an ordinance banning the wolf hunt a few days ago.

Dan Kraker provided some fairly decent balanced coverage that explains some of the legal and cultural implications of the wolf hunt in this MPR News story.

  1. Good eye Digit3. They moved pretty fast from ordinance to signs posted so that may have been a factor.

I heard someone that I respect and admire arguing that eliminating wolves near human populations is important because of the safety of our kids and property. Same with bears. I said I respect and admire, I didn’t say I agree with this view.

  2. I was done posting for this week, then, just now, on the evening news, the nice man mentions the hunters who, just “harvested thirty wolves.”

I don’t mind harvesting deer, or children. But, harvesting wolves, that just sounds shit-mouthed, like it came out wrong. Really, it beckons some Strangelovian reflex in me, to backhand the mouth of the person it’s coming out of, even if they’re wearing a nice suit and tie. Then again, that’s the same feeling Mitt and Bush give me.

Harvested Wolves might be nice on a stick though, at the Minnesota State Fair, next to the cotton candy.

  3. From what I gather, there has *never* been a confirmed case of a wolf attacking a human being in Minnesota. Ever.

So far, during the debate, I’ve heard some pretty tall stories about a pack numbering 50 to folks claiming that family pets were taken off leashes while their owners were walking them…I’ll admit that I don’t know much, but what I *do* know, while remotely possible, makes these stories seem like hooey.

  4. Exactly. But until they become a nuisance (to pets or property, etc.) … if you want to trim the pack, thin the prey.

I’ve been up close to them … or as close as they care to get, that is … a few yards perhaps on a few nights up on the trail. They’re intimidating as all hell, that’s for sure … especially when you’re probably the only person within a mile radius. First time or two I was (admittedly) a little more than nervous. They’re a part of the backdrop.
