I’m not aware of a commercial orchard in the immediate area, but UMD’s Sustainable Agriculture Project is having an apple picking and tasting event this Saturday afternoon. The orchard is right by the soccer fields on Jean Duluth Road.
I’ve used pickyourown.org to find orchards before, but I was in Minneapolis at the time. Their list is organized by county.
None that I am aware of… but we would be remiss if we did not mention the Bayfield Apple Festival which is coming up soon.
Can’t wait for Apple Fest!! We always stop and pick our own at one of the orchards on our way home. Definitely the way to do it. If you find the right orchard you sometimes find the snack/wine/beer tastings too. Yummy!
Don’t have to wait for Apple Fest to go over and get apples and other goodies, went over 2 weeks ago and more than one place was open and doing brisk business. Apple Fest just… concentrates it, more people in the same space at the same time. (Pro Tip: Apple Pie Sticks at Erickson’s)
I would love to go earlier but my family schedule doesn’t allow it. From 4th of July up until pretty much Apple Festival it’s racing, camping, events, etc.. every weekend. Apple fest is my “get away with the girls” time and we have a strategy down so we rarely have to deal with the crowds at a constant pace.
Due to the crazy weather we’ve had this year (early spring, early summer, frost a little early), I think everything is ripe 2-3 weeks early, at least. So…next year might be better.
You should also ask around: if you walk by an apple tree that’s dropping lots of apples on the ground and ask nicely, often the owner will share with you.
Gilby’s Orchard is the closest. Highway 210, just east of Highway 169. It’s nearly an hour drive, but worth it.
