Video Archive: Iron Ore from the Mesabi Mines in 1920

This 1920 silent documentary film depicts the mining, shipping and processing of iron ore from the Mesabi Range. Scenes from Duluth begin at the ore docks at the 1:55 mark and conclude at the shipping canal at the 3-minute mark.

There’s a nice little glimpse of Canal Park at the end of the Duluth segment.

  1. This is awesome. Looks like its when it was raw ore before the taconite pellet process was needed. I haven’t seen this stage before as well as all the steam powered trains, and shovels. The docks are in Duluth and one is still in operation but for taconite pellets so its a little different after the dock was converted.

Thanks PDD for another history clip!
